The policeman was moving along the avenue. He looked not only strong but also important.
(その警官は大通り沿いを歩いていた。彼は強いだけでなく、威厳を持っているようにも見えた。)
He usually walked in this way. Clearly he did not expect to show others how he looked, for persons who would see him then were few.
(彼はいつもこのように歩いている。明らかに、彼は自分が他の人にどのように見えているかを意識していなかったし、そのとき彼を見ようとする人はほとんどいなかったからだ。)
Though the time was only about ten o'clock, a cold wind was blowing hard. Besides, it was raining a little, so there were few people walking outdoors.
(時間はだいたい10時頃であったにもかかわらず、冷たい風が激しく吹きつけてきた。それに加えて雨が少し降っていたので、野外を歩いている人はほとんどいなかった。)

As he walked on, he stopped at each door. He kindly tried the door to be sure that it was closed for the night.
(彼は歩きながら、それぞれのドアの前に立ち止まった。彼は親切に戸締りがされているかということを確認するためにドアをあけようとした。)
He sometimes turned around and looking up and down the avenue.He was a watchful, fine-looking policeman who was guarding the peace of city.
(彼はときどき振り向き、大通りを見渡した。彼は都市の平和を守っていた用心深く立派な警官だった。)

Nearly all the people in this part of the city went home rather early. Now and then the light of a cigar store or of a restaurant were seen. But most of the doors belonging to business places were already shut at this time of the night.
(町のこの部分のほとんどすべての人は、少し早めに家に帰る。ときどき、タバコ屋やレストランの明かりが見られた。しかし、商店のドアのほとんどは夜のこのときすでに閉じられていた。)

Suddenly the policeman began to walkslowly. Near the door of a dark hardware store a man was standing alone. He had an unlit cigar in his mouth. As the policeman went up to him, the man started to talk to him quickly.
(突然警官はゆっくりと歩き始めた。暗くなった金物屋のドアの近くに一人の男が立っていた。彼は、火のついてない葉巻を口にくわえていた。警官が彼に近づくと、その男は慌てて声を発した。)
"It's all right, officer,"he said. "I'm just waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago we promised to meet here tonight. It sounds a little strange to you, doesn't it? Well, I'll explain it if you want to know. It's all true. About twenty years ago there was a restaurant at the place where this store stands now −‘Big joe’Brady's restaurant."
(「大丈夫ですよおまわりさん」と、彼は言った。「おれはただ友達を待っているんです。20年前、おれ達は今夜ここで会うと約束をしたんですがね。ちょっとおかしな話しに聞こえるでしょ？そりゃ、もし知りたいって言うなら説明しますよ。すべて真実をね。だいたい20年くらい前に今この店が建っているところにはレストランがあったんですよ。―『ビッグ･ジョー』ブレディーのレストランがね。)

The policeman said,"It stood here until some five years ago. Then, however, it was torn down."
(警官は「それがここに建っていたのは5年くらい前までだ。取り壊された。」と言った。)
As the man by the door struck a match and lit his cigar, the light showed a pale square face and a little scar near his right eye. His eyes were very keen.
(ドアの近くの男はマッチをすって葉巻に火をつけた。その明かりで色白で角張った顔と、彼の右目の近くの小さい傷痕が写しだされた。彼の目はとても鋭かった。)
In his scarfpin he had a large diamond strangely set.
(ネクタイピンには大きなダイヤがついていて、変わった付け方で留められていた。)

"Twenty years ago tonight,"said the man, "I ate dinner here at‘Big joe’Brady's restaurant with Jimmy Wells, my best friend. He and I grew up here in New York, just like two brothers. I was eighteen, while jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was going to start for the West to make a great fortune. I advised him to go with me. But I could not drag him out of New York, for he though it was the only place on earth. Well, we agreed that night we would meet here once more after just twenty years even if we lived very far away. We considered that in twenty years we might know what sort of men we were and how large our fortunes were."
(「20年前の今夜」と、男は言った。「ここの『ビッグ･ジョー』ブレディーの店でおれは一番の親友のジミー･ウェルズと食事をしたんですよ。やつきっと世界中で最もすばらしい若者だったよ。やつとおれはこのニューヨークで、まるで兄弟みたいに育ちましてね。おれが18歳でジミーが20歳。おれはその翌朝一儲けするために西部へ向けて出発することになってまして。おれはやつに一緒に行くように相談したんですがね。でもやつはここが地上で唯一の場所とでも思ってたんでしょうかね。おれはやつをニューヨークから連れ出すことができなかったんですよ。その晩、20年経ったらここでまた会おうて話しになったんですよ。どんなに離れていてもね。おれたちは20年後ならどのような人間になっていて、どれだけの財産を築いているかが分かるだろうと考えたんですよ。」)

"It sound pretty interesting," said the policeman. "But twenty years in rather a long time between meeting, isn't it? Have you heard from your friend since you left?"
(「なかなか面白い話しですね」と、警官は言った。「しかし20年というのは私にはずいぶん長く思えますけど？出発して以来、友だちから連絡は一度もなかったんで？」)

"Oh, yes, for some time we exchanged letters," said the man. "But after a years or two we stopped writing to each other. The West is very wide. Moreover, I moved about there from place to place. But I'm sure that Jimmy will come here if he's still alive, for he's a man who never breaks his promise. He hasn't forgotten his promise to meet me here, I'm sure. I've come a thousand miles to stand here tonight."
(それは、ええ、しばらくの間は手紙のやり取りをしましたよ」と、男は言った。「けど1，2年後にはお互いに音信不通になってね。西部ってのはとても広くって。それだからおれもあちこち飛び回ってましたから。だけど、生きている限りジミーがここに来るってのはおれには分かっているんです。だってやつは約束をやぶったことがありませんから。やつがおれと会うことを忘れるわけがないって、そう信じてます。今夜ここに立つために、おれは1000マイルも旅してきたんですから。」)

The waiting man pulled out a fine watch whose lid was covered with little diamonds.
(待ち合わせをしていた男は立派なふたに小さなダイアモンドがはめ込まれた時計を取り出した。)
"Three minutes to ten," he said. "It was just ten o'clock when I parted from him."
(「10時3分前」と、男は告げた。「ちょうど10時でした、おれとやつが別れたのが。」)

"You've made a lage fortune in the West, haven't you?" asked the policeman.
(「西部では一財産築けたってわけですね？」と警官は尋ねた。)

"Yes, I have," answere the man.　"I hope Jimmy has done half as well as I. Although he was a good youth, his hear was not very sharp. I wonder what has become of him. I've had to struggle with difficulties to become very rich. In New York a man doesn't change so much. In the West, however, anyone who wants to succeed must learn how to fight with others."
(「もちろんですよ」と、男は答えた。ジミーがおれの半分ぐらいでもうまくやっててくれてりゃぁいいと思ってますよ。けれどあいつはお人よしで、頭は鋭いとはいえないから。おれはやつがどうなったか知りたいよ。おれの方は儲けるために困難を乗り越えなくちゃならなかったから。ニューヨークじゃ人は変われない。西部ではどんなやつでも成功するために他人と張り合うことを学ぶよ。)

When the policeman started to leave him, he said, "Now I'll go on my way. I hope your friend will come around all right. Are you going to leave here if he doesn't appear at ten?"
(警官は男のもとを離れるときに聞いた。「私はもう行くが、あんたの友達が無事にやってくるといいね。10時までに彼が現れなかったら、あんたはここから去るのかい？」)

"Oh, no," answered the man. "I'll give him half an hour at least. If Jimmy is still alive, he'll surely come by that time. So long, officer."
(「そんなことはありませんよ」と、男は答えた。「少なくとも30分は彼に時間をやるつもりです。もしジミーがこの世に生きているなら、それまでには来るでしょうよ。それじゃあ、おまわりさん。」)

"Good night, sir," said the policeman. He walked away along the avenue.
(「おやすみなさい、だんな」と、警官は言った。彼は大通りに沿って歩いて行った。)

The policeman walked away. It was raining and the cold wind was blowing hard. And at the door of the hardware store the man who had come a thousand miles stood smoking a cigar.
(警官は歩いて行った。雨と冷たい風がふきつけていた。そして、金物屋の戸口では、1000マイルを旅してきた男が、葉巻を吸って待っていた。)
Of course such a meeting could not be certain. But he was waiting patiently for the friend of his youth.
(もちろん確実にあるわけではない。いかし、彼は若いときの親友を辛抱強く待っていた。)

About twenty minutes he waited. And then a tall man in a long overcoat whose collar was turned up to his ears came along very quickly. He went directly to the waiting man.
(20分ほど彼は待った。そこに長いオーバーコートを着て、襟を耳まで立てた背の高い男が急いで道をわたってきた。彼は待っている男のところへ真っすぐにやってきた。)

" Is that you, Bob?" he asked doubtfully.
(「おまえか、ボブ？」と、彼はためらいがちに尋ねた。)

"Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" shouted the man at the door.
(「おまえか、ジミー･ウェルズ？と、戸口の男が叫んだ。」)

The man who had just arrived grasped both the other's hands with his own.
(たった今到着した男は、相手の両手を自分の両手でつかみながら声を上げた。)
He cried gladly, "Certainly, you're Bob. I was sure that I would find you here if you were still living. Well, twenty years is a very long time. The old restaurant has gone. I'm sorry it's not here. I've wanted to eat another dinner in it with you. How has the West treated you, Bob?"
(彼はうれし泣きしながら、「間違いない、ボブだ。おまえが生きているならまたここで会えると信じていたよ。さてさて、20年というのはとても長い時間だ。あのレストランはなくなっているよ。残念だな。またあそこで思えと食事がしたかったのになあ。西部ではどんな目にあったんだ、ボブ？」)

"Quite fine. It has given me everything I wanted to get. It's long indeed since we parted. But you've changed a lot, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall. Now you are a few inches taller than I."
(「最高だよ。おれが望んだものが何もかも手に入ったよ。おれたちが別れてからは確かに長い。それにしてもおまえは変わったよな、ジミー。こんなに背が高いなんて思わなかった。今じゃぁおれよりか数インチは高いじゃないか。」)

"Oh, I grew a little after I was twenty."
(「ああ、20歳を過ぎてから少し伸びたんだ。」)

"Are you doing well in New York, Jimmy?"
(「ニューヨークではうまくやっているのか、ジミー？」)

"Pretty well. I've a position in the city office. Come on, Bob. Let's go to a place I know and have a good long talk about old times."
(まぁまぁだな。市役所の一部署に勤めているんだよ。来いよ、ボブ。おれの知っているところへ行って、ゆっくり楽しい昔話でもしようじゃないか。」)

The two men started to walk, arm in arm along the avenue. Bob was beginning to tell the history of his life. His old friend listened to it with much interest.
(2人の男たちは、互いに腕を組んで通りに沿って歩き始めた。ボブは自分の生活の過去を説明し始めていた。彼の友人は興味深そうに耳を傾けた。)

At the corner stood a drug store which was bright with electric lights.
(曲がり角にはドラッグストアが建っていて、電灯がまぶしくついていた。)
When they came into the bright light, each of them turned to look at the other's face at the same time.
(その明るい光の中にさしかかったとき、どちらも同時に顔を上げ、互いの顔をじっと見つめた。) The man from the West stopped walking suddenly and freed his arm.
(西部からきた男は突然立ち止まると、腕を振りはらった。)

"You're not Jimmy Wells," he shouted. "Though twenty years is quite a long time, it's not long enough to change the shape of a man's nose."
(「おまえはジミー･ウェルズじゃない」と、彼は叫んだ。「20年は長い時間だが、一人の男の鼻の形を変えるほどは長くないぞ。」)

"It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one," said the tall man. "You were already caught ten minutes ago, Bob. The police in Chicago thought maybe you had come to New York. So they sent us a wire asking us to watch for you. Will you come with me quietly?"
(「その歳月が善良な男を悪党に変えることはある。」と、背の高い男は言った。「おまえは10分前から逮捕されているんだ、ボブ。シカゴの警察はおまえがニューヨークに来るかもしれないと考えた。それだからシカゴ当局はおまえに注意するようにと電報を送ったんだ。おとなしく来るだろ？」)

As soon as Bob heard what the tall man had said, he was so surprised that he turned pale. But he did not try to run away at all.
(ボブはすぐに背の高い男の言っていることが分かり、驚き青ざめた。しかし彼はまったく逃げようとはしなかった。)

"That's wise," the tall man said. "Now, here's a note which I was asked to hand to you before you go to the police station. You may read it here now. It's from a patrolman whose name is Jimmy Wells."
(「それが賢明だ」と、背の高い男は言った。「ところで、署に向かう前に、ここにおまえに渡すようにと頼まれた手紙がある。今ここで読むといい。ウェルズ巡査からだ。」)

The man from the West opened the little sheet of paper handed to him. As he started to read it, his hand was steady. But it trembled a little before he had finished reading.
(西部からきた男は、手渡された小さな紙片を開いた。読み始めたときは彼の手はしっかりとしていた。しかし、読み終えるころには少し震えていた。)
The note was rather short.
(手紙はかなり短いものだった。)

Bob:
I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar, I saw it was the face of the man wanted by the police in Chicago. But I couldn't do the job myself, so I left you there and asked a plain clothes policeman to do it instead of me.

どうしても自分で[警察の仕事をすることが]できなかったから、そこから離れて、私服警官に私の代わりにこの仕事をやってもらったんだ。
